Reduce your energy consumption

U.S. Borax Dehybor® results from the dehydration and fusion of borax. This hard, glassy, granular product is used in glass, ceramic, and enamel frit production to help increase yields and reduce energy consumption.

As a result, Dehybor is a popular choice for use in manufacturing borosilicate and other glasses, glazes, and enamels. It’s also a useful ingredient in industrial cleaning products. And, thanks to its crosslinking abilities, it has found a place in energy production.

Dehybor applications

What can Dehybor do for you?

In borosilicate glass manufacturing, Dehybor has advantages over 5- and 10-mol borax:

  • Dehybor has a higher bulk density and melts more rapidly, even with minimum energy.

  • Dehybor is also a source of sodium and can be used with boric acid or boric oxide to control the sodium oxide/boric oxide ratio in the glass.

  • To formulate glasses with low thermal expansion (high thermal shock resistance) and good chemical durability, Dehybor acts as both a flux and network former.

Dehybor allows the formulation of low-melting glazes and enamels with the correct thermal expansion in glass and enamel production. In enamels, it also improves adhesion to metal by dissolving iron oxide and reducing the melt surface tension.

Dehybor

Dehybor provides benefits across industrial applications

  • Acts as a solvent for metallic oxides at high temperatures

  • Serves as a cover flux to protect metal surfaces from air oxidation

  • Acts as a scavenger to dissolve metallic oxides and other contaminants in the production of ferrous and non-ferrous metals

  • Stabilizes stainless-steel slag, reducing slag dust and improving handling while minimizing explosion risk due to the absence of water molecules

  • Stabilizes and acts as a bonding agent in firebricks and castables

  • Provides an intermediate-temperature glassy bond prior to the establishment of the ceramic bond (at which point the borate compound is frequently volatilized from the system)

  • Is used in slow-dissolving cleaning briquettes formulation, based on gelled or solidified borate suspensions where the slow release of borate softens water to prevent scale buildup, while also deodorizing and inhibiting stain formation

  • Reacts with polymers in oil production to create high-viscosity oil-well fluids that help increase the recovery of oil from subterranean formations

Dehybor

Technical details

This hard, glassy, granular material gradually absorbs water under ambient storage conditions, so care should be taken to prevent exposure to humid air and moisture. In aqueous solution, it can provide a slow release of boron.

Dehybor generally handles well in terms of its flow characteristics, but attention must be given to the abrasive nature of the particles. When handling large quantities or for long-term, continuous operation of the unloading plant, we strongly suggest using mechanical transfer equipment rather than pneumatic systems.

Dehybor anhydrous borax is available in a 12-, or 30-mesh grade. Dehybor 12-Mesh and 30-Mesh meet the No. 12 and No. 30 US sieve specifications (< 0.1 % retained), with a mesh size of 1.7 mm and 0.600 mm, respectively.

The melting point is 742 °C (1368 °F), and the reaction of Dehybor with water is exothermic.

Chemical and physical properties

› Molecular weight: 201.22

› Specific gravity: 2.37

› Appearance: Free-flowing, colorless, glassy

› Stability: Dehybor is a stable, fused borate product that does not change chemically under normal storage conditions. If wetted, it reacts exothermically, forming hydrated sodium borates. When storing the product, avoid exposure to a humid atmosphere, which might cause caking. Also be sure to maintain the integrity of the packaging.

› Bulk density: 1,074 kg/m3 (67 lb/ft3)

› Angle of repose: 35°

Chemical composition (theoretical)

Boric oxide, B2O3: ~69%

Sodium oxide, Na2O: ~31%

Containers: Products may be available in bulk, IBCs, or small bags
